What Is Content Freshness?

Content freshness is how recent and up to date a page appears to AI engines and crawlers. It is measured through machine-readable dates, the age of the content, and the language and signals on the page that indicate when it was last reviewed. Pages with clear, current freshness signals are more likely to be trusted and cited by AI systems.

What Glippy Checks

• Machine-readable dates - datePublished and dateModified in JSON-LD, article published and modified time meta tags, or a <time datetime> element in the main content. A date shown only as text earns partial credit; the HTTP Last-Modified header does not count
• Content age - months since the most recent published or updated date (6 months or less reads as current)
• Temporal language - current-year references vs outdated years in the title, the H1, or an "updated" note. History such as "since 1998" or "founded in" is never stale, and phrases like "recently" are judged against the page's own date
• Copyright year - whether the footer year is current
• Version & changelog signals - version numbers, release notes, "what's new". Prices, IP addresses and product article numbers are not mistaken for versions. This is a beta check: shown for guidance, not scored

Product and landing pages are not expected to carry a publication date: a machine-readable date earns credit there, a missing one costs nothing, and content age is only assessed when the page declares a dateModified. Articles, documentation and general pages are expected to be dated. Content age, temporal language and copyright year are always scored. A found date always earns its points, but a missing date only costs points when the page type is clear (from schema.org markup, for example); when the type comes only from og:type, the URL or the title, the date check is shown with that reason and not scored. Visible dates are read in English, Dutch, German and French.
