Content Comprehensiveness Checker: Do Your Pages Answer the Whole Question?
Comprehensive pages answer more of the sub-questions around a topic, which increases the surface AI engines can quote and cite. Glippy measures how completely each page covers its topic, because thin pages lose to deeper competitors when AI decides which source to trust.
What Is Content Comprehensiveness?
Content comprehensiveness is how completely a page answers the question it sets out to address, including the related sub-questions a reader and an AI engine expect to find. A comprehensive page covers definitions, context, comparisons, and next steps rather than a single shallow answer. The more of the topic you cover well, the more reasons an AI system has to retrieve and cite your page.
What Glippy Checks
- Depth vs page type - main-content word count against a target for the detected page type (for example about 1,500 words for an article, 500 for a product page, 300 for a category page, and 600 for documentation), with no penalty for going longer
- Heading coverage - H2 to H4 headings in proportion to the length of the page (about one per 400 words), and a flag when sections are split too thin to say anything
- Definitions - "X is a Y that..." sentences, "also known as", <dfn> and <dl> elements, and "What is X" headings followed by an answer. Questions and opinions such as "X is a great product" do not count as definitions
- Comparisons - "vs", "compared with", "alternative to", pros and cons, and comparison tables
- Navigation aids - a table of contents that links to your headings, related content, and a summary or key takeaways
Depth and heading coverage are always scored; when the page type is unclear, depth is measured against a general target instead of the article one. Long articles and documentation pages (1,000+ words) are expected to offer navigation aids, a check that is scored only when the page type is clear. Definitions and comparisons are beta checks: shown for guidance with a one-line reason, not scored. On product, landing and general pages a missing navigation aid costs nothing, and pages under 250 words are not judged on heading structure. Definitions and comparisons are recognized in English, Dutch, German and French.
Why Comprehensiveness Matters for AI Search
AI engines prefer sources that resolve a question end to end, so a page that answers the full intent gives the model more passages to quote and fewer reasons to look elsewhere. When a competitor covers the same topic in more depth, they win the citation. Comprehensive, well-structured pages turn a single query into many quotable answers.
